Support for Families Over the Holidays

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to pass along this message from our Social Work team:

Christmas for many families can present a number of challenges.  Poverty, substance use, family violence, stress, mental health challenges and a lack of structure (i.e.: school!)  can all be reasons for families to not be so “merry” at Christmas time.  Lengthy vacations like the Christmas season can be overwhelming for some families.  There are many resources in our community that can assist families throughout this season, please let students and families know about the following resources should you become aware of a particular stressor or are contacted by a student throughout the holiday period:

Mental Health:

  1. HERE24/7 is a telephone service that can assist students and adults in need 1-844-437-3247 (always encourage people to Press the #1 option so that it can be answered by a live person).  **They also have a walk-in service from 9-6 daily at their office in Waterloo, 1 Blue Springs Drive, across from the East Side Mario’s just a few blocks from St David.  They are closed Christmas/Boxing/NY day only this year.

  1. Front Door is a walk-in Service for kids/parents with kids under 16 where they can speak to a counselor for free on Wednesdays (noon – 6:30pm) and are open on Dec 27/17 and Jan 3/18

  1. Carizon Family Counselling – offers walk-in counselling (no apt./no cost) on Tuesday Jan.2/18

Emergency sources of Food:

  1. House of Friendship Food Hamper Program – 807 Guelph Street Kitchener 11am-4pm 519 742-0662
  2. St Vincent DePaul – our local Catholic Churches each have a group of volunteers who can help deliver food to residents in their local neighborhood (you do not have to be Catholic)

Emergency Housing:

  1. Mary’s Place is a shelter for families in the Down Town area of Kitchener 519-744-0120

  1. Women and Children who are in need of safety, Woman’s Crisis Services 519-742-5894
  2. Sexual Assault Support and Domestic Violence Treatment Centre 519 749 6994

Take care!

Merry Christmas

Turkey Lunch

Good morning,

Tomorrow is our traditional, full – school turkey lunch.  We are excited to break bread together as a large community. Thanks to our School Council and the many parent volunteers who are setting up today and serving us tomorrow.

We hear there will be a special visitor tomorrow as well!!!

Please remember to wear your Christmas colours tomorrow.

Take care and continue to anticipate and wait with hope, peace, faith and love for Christ’s birth.

Christmas Concert Intention Letter

Happy 2nd Week of Advent.

We hope you are enjoying the weekend and some snow!

This is a friendly reminder that next Thursday, December 21st, is our Christmas Concert.  Please send in the bottom portion of the letter indicating if you are coming and when, so that we have enough seating and we are prepared.

Thanks also for your angel tree gifts- the tree is looking quite full of stars which indicates gifts purchased for those in our community who may need some support over the holidays. Thanks for making Christmas special for those in our community and beyond by purchasing an angel tree gift.

Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, December 8th is a PD Day.
