Important Message re Ongoing Labour Negotiations – CUPE

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you may be aware from media reports, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing education workers across the province, has announced plans to begin a province-wide “Work-to-Rule’ campaign beginning on Monday, September 30, 2019.

We are aware that bargaining between the union and government is planned to continue throughout the weekend. We respect collective bargaining and are hopeful that a freely negotiated agreement will be reached soon.

Regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s bargaining, all of our schools will remain open, and CUPE staff will report to work as usual. Student instruction will continue in our classrooms and, as always, the safety and well-being of students will continue to be our top priority.

As a Catholic school board, we value all of our staff as dedicated, caring professionals, and we respect labour laws that affirm the legal rights of our unionized employee groups to engage in job actions. We know that all sides are working hard to reach agreements, and we are hopeful that a new central agreement will soon be reached with our CUPE education workers.

Where to Find Information Updates

As new information becomes available it will be posted to the WCDSB website at: https://www.wcdsb.ca/about-us/labour-updates/

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period of uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which WCDSB employees are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees?

A: The following WCDSB positions are represented by CUPE:

  • Education Assistants
  • Personal Support Workers
  • Child and Youth Care Workers
  • Early Childhood Educators
  • Lunch Hour Supervisors
  • Administrative Assistants
  • Payroll and Accounting Associates
  • Computer Technicians
  • Library Technicians
  • Communicative Disorders Assistants

Q: What does “work to rule” mean?

A:  CUPE has indicated that they are planning to withdraw specific services that they would normally perform.  Employees represented by CUPE provide many important services within our schools and board, and despite our best efforts the withdrawal of these services will cause some disruption. We will not be able to completely eliminate all impacts. Despite the impact of the withdrawal of services, we know that our schools will remain welcoming Christ centred environments.

Thunderbird Update

Hello Thunderbird Families:

We are settling into our school year and many amazing things are happening in the Thunderbird Nest! Please take some time to read through the following items so you are up to date with action items and events that are taking place.

  • This year our ‘First Day’ Package forms were uploaded to your child’s Cash Online account to be completed. It is very important that we have all forms for each student completed by Monday September 30th. These forms are essential as many of them indicate how you would like us to support your children in emergency situations, provide permission for photos and so much more.

  • Our open house is tonight (Sept 26th), from 6:00-7:30. St. Anthony Daniel Parish Food Trucks will be in the large church parking lot from 4:30-8:00. We cannot wait to meet our Thunderbird families!

  • Most of our primary student agendas have arrived and are in the process of being distributed. Unfortunately, there was a board wide issue with the agenda provider and many schools are still waiting to receive the remainder of their shipment, we are one of those schools. Once the agendas arrive we will get them out to your children. In the meantime, please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher in the way they have indicated in their newsletters.

  • Our Terry Fox event is tomorrow, Friday September 27th at 2:30. Please be sure you have signed off on our neighbourhood walks form on your child’s cash online account so they can be part of this experience. Also, please feel free to donate to this worthy cause on your child’s Cash Online account or at: https://secure.terryfox.ca/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?TeamID=858284#&panel1-1

  • We are very excited to share with you that we are now an Umbrella Project school. The Umbrella Project is a curriculum designed to help your child learn the skills of emotional well-being. This year we will be focusing on empathy, growth mindset, cognitive flexibility, authenticity, purpose, kindness, self-efficacy, optimism and lifestyle. Throughout the month of October we will be focusing on: Empathy. Developing these skills will help your child lead a happier, more successful life. The Umbrella Project skills all align with the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. If you would like to learn more about this please visit: http://www.umbrellaproject.co/
  • Please remember that we have many Thunderbirds that have severe life threatening allergies. Please continue to be sure food items that come to school are nut/peanut free. For those families with specific food allergen accommodations in your child’s class, continue to check food packaging so we can keep our Thunderbirds safe. Thank you so very much for your support.

  • Feel free to drop your children off at our kiss and drop zone in front of the school in the mornings. Please do not park or get out of your car in this area. Additionally, you can continue to park in the large shared church parking lot, or along Midland observing parking signs and fire hydrants. Please refrain from using the community centre parking lot or the lane-way to park or drop/pick up. Thanks so much for helping to keep everyone safe!

  • Pizza lunch begins Friday September 27th for grades 1-8. Pizza orders will reopen on Monday September 30th and Tuesday October 1st for you to order for the remainder of the term, September through to December. After Tuesday October 1st pizza orders will be closed and not reopened until January.

Thank you so much for all you do! We feel very privileged to be on this journey with your children. #CalledToBelong

Lane-way Update: We’re building community, and we want you there!

Please join us on Wednesday, September 25 after school to create a “pop up Woonerf”

What’s a Woonerf?

A Woonerf is a living street, where where equal priority is given to all modes of transportation including automobiles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Why are we doing it?
We want to test some arrangements to give a sense of what the street could feel like and how traffic could be tamed in this shared community space, in order to make it a safer space for everyone, at all hours and on all days.

How are we doing it?
We are going to use temporary materials like paint, artificial turf, tires, and fake plants. Volunteers will be asked to paint, lift, and smile as we prepare the street, then take part in the applicable evening events.

How long will it last?
We hope to leave the installation in place until Monday, September 30, though we expect much of the paint to wear off by then.

Why so short?
This is a test and hopeful proof of how this space can become more friendly to the pedestrians that access it regularly. We can adjust the plan as necessary if authorities agree that long-term changes make sense. On Thursday September 26th, the lane-way between St. Daniel School, St. Anthony Daniel Church and the Stanley Park community center will be transformed into a shared streetscape. Using movable furniture like planters, benches, paint and other elements, we hope to re-imagine the space to make it more vibrant and to increase pedestrian safety. We will observe how cars and pedestrians move through the space over the span of a few days; adjusting furniture and spacing as needed. The hope is to test various designs so we can create a more permanent traffic calming solution in the future.

The concept follows that of the Dutch Woonerf or “shared street”, where cars, pedestrians and cyclists have equal share of the space. Check out Better Block http://betterblock.org/to see how this concept can come to life.

We are looking for volunteers to help set-up and paint the installation on the Wednesday night prior to the pop-up date. If you are available please meet at St. Daniel at (time). We will assemble and place furniture and paint the crosswalks with temporary paint. Please email Dawn_Cordeiro@stswr.cato sign up.

White Bus 135

Hello Families:

White bus 135 is on it’s way. Please wait at your spot for your Thunderbird.

Thanks

Reminders and Routines

Hello Thunderbird Families:

Thanks so much for a great first day! We would like to share with you some housekeeping items for keeping your child(ren) safe and our school flowing smoothly.

Early Dismissal:

If you are planning on picking up your child early at the end of the day, please write a note/email the classroom teacher to inform them of these alternate plans, they will ensure your child gets to the appropriate location. Calling the office last minute creates confusion for your child(ren).

Walkers/Drivers:

We highly recommend that you determine a pick up meeting location with your child(ren) as we have many students we are trying to get on buses. A good spot for this would be the large new blacktop area behind the school, away from the bus lines. We respectfully ask that you keep well away from the doors and from buses as it is not safe and causes congestion and confusion for the children.Teachers have 2 doors from the school they dismiss from; one exiting on the church side and the other out toward the back of the school. Teachers will communicate with you which exit they will be dismissing from.

Parking:

Please park in the shared church parking lot when picking up/dropping off your child(ren). You can also park on Midland along the fence side of the street, being aware of the appropriate street signs and fire hydrants. Please do not park/drop-off/pick up your child(ren) in the community centre parking lot. Also, please do not stop or park in the lane-way, this is a bus loading and fire safety zone. Finally, the kiss and drop area at the front of the school is reserved for special transportation and quick pick ups/drop offs, there is no parking in this area. Bylaw officers do patrol all of these areas often and will issue a ticket if you are not following the parking routine.

Student Agendas:

Please be advised that all student agendas are on back order. In the meantime, communication can be via phone, writing notes or emails. Please refer to teacher suggestions/preferences for communication until our agendas arrive.

In the end, our goal is to keep everyone safe and we need your support and cooperation to make this happen.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Giglio-Chiasson
Principal

Ms. Weber
Vice Principal

Parking

Hello Thunderbird Families:

Just a friendly reminder to park in our large shared parking lot behind the church. You may also park on Midland along the fence side; please read all road signs and do not block fire hydrants. If pulling into our front parking lot, please note that this is a kiss and drop zone only, you cannot park there, we need this area to be free flowing. Finally, please do not park or stop in the lane way or in the community centre lot.

Thanks so much for your support!
