Halloween Spirit Week

Hello Thunderbird Families:

Please find our Halloween spirit week activities below! It is sure to be a spooktacular week full of frightfully fun activities!

On October 29th we are inviting students to come to school dressed in their Halloween costumes. In order to ensure that all of our students enjoy their day and we continue to follow COVID protocols, there are a few guidelines that we would like all students to follow with respect to costumes:

  • Masks that cover the face or imitation weapons of any kind are not allowed. (students must wear their COVID face mask during the day)
  • Extremely graphic or gory costumes (including blood) are not allowed. We have very young students who might be afraid.
  • Costumes should be simple enough for students to manage independently. They will still need to put their COVID face mask on/take it off and wash/sanitize their hands throughout the day.
  • Costumes should not interfere with classroom activities. Students must be able to sit, walk, see, hear, etc.
  • Costumes should not be revealing in nature.

Please Note: Due to continued COVID-19 restrictions this year, students are not allowed to bring in any treats or non-food items such as stickers, pencils, glow bracelets, etc. to share or hand out to friends. We appreciate your understanding.

We are looking forward to a fun filled week full of school spirit, smiles and laughter!

Today is National Early Childhood Educators Day

The staff and students of St. Daniel School would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our Early Childhood Educators today on “National Early Childhood Educators Day”.  It is often said that “It takes a big heart to work with a small child.”  We are so thankful for your efforts with our youngest learners.  Our students in Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten learn and grow so much, thanks to your efforts with them, day-in and day-out.  Your endless patience, kindness and enthusiasm with our youngest learners helps to create an environment that they want to be in, that their families trust, and that builds the foundation for a wonderful educational experience for years to come.  Today, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of you!

Today is National Bus Drivers Day

St. Daniel School would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our Bus Drivers today on “National Bus Drivers Day”.   You brave the weather to get our kids safely where they need to be, while being a shining example for students as you do it!  You are truly superhero’s and today we want to say THANK YOU!

Student Census Reminder (Grade 4-8)

The WCDSB Student Census is fast approaching. The census is an online survey that collects data specifically related to self-identity, demographics, and experiences at school. The WCDSB Student Census is a confidential and voluntary survey for all students in Grades 4 to 12. The goal of the Student Census is to better understand the diversity of students within the WCDSB and to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social and demographic makeup of our students.  https://www.wcdsb.ca/student-census/

This work is mandated for all school boards in Ontario under the Provincial Anti-Racism Act (ARA s.6(2)). The census will allow us to gain detailed insight as to the cultural, social and demographic makeup of our students and will be used to identify/eliminate systemic barriers. This is a valuable opportunity for us to learn more about the students we support and help us to identify differences and gaps in our students’ experiences and outcomes, based on their diverse needs.

The Student Census includes questions about:
• Indigenous Identity
• First Languages
• Ethnic/Cultural Background
• Racial Identity
• Citizenship Status
• Religious/Spiritual Affiliation
• Gender At Birth/Gender Identity (9-12)
• Sexual Orientation (9-12)
• Challenges (e.g., ADHD, Hearing Impairment)
• Household Characteristics
• School Experiences (e.g., Belonging)

The Student Census supports many curriculum connections. Some of which include:
• Transferable Skills (All Curriculum 1-12): Global Citizenship and Sustainability
• Family Life (Grade 1-8): Living In Relationship B2 Exploring Human Nature
• Social Studies (Grade 1-6): Vision and Goals of the Program

All students from grades 4 through 12, regardless of their learning modality (e.g., face-to-face, virtual), are invited to participate. We offer the survey online, however, a paper format is available upon request through the school Administrator. The survey will be taken during class time and devices will be made available to students.

The Student Census is voluntary. Parents/Guardians of students under the age of 18 can request their child be exempt by completing the opt-out form available by October 22nd. Please visit: https://www.wcdsb.ca/student-census/

Further, in November, any student may choose not to participate, to stop participating, or to skip a question at any time, regardless of whether their parents/guardians consented. If you have questions about the WCDSB Student Census, please contact the school Principal or WCDSBResearch@wcdsb.ca and one of the Census team staff members will respond shortly.

At St. Daniel School, classes in Grades 4-8 will complete the Student Census between November 1 – 12, 2021.
